Policy Standards: I'm confused - are there any standards?

There are so many types of health and critical illness policies it can be extremely confusing. Different policies cover different conditions, and have very different definitions.

Standardisation across the Insurance industry has made easier comparisons, policies more transparent and health insurance more widely accessible.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) have set out minimum standards for critical illness products. In brief the standards are:

A standard product must cover certain medical conditions, referred to as ‘core’, and ‘additional’. Conditions that fall outside of these categories must be specified and referred to as ‘extra’.

The ‘core’ and ‘additional’ conditions must themselves satisfy an ABI-standard, to ensure wide and clearly defined coverage.

We have used this classification in our list on our page: Medical Conditions Covered

A notice to a Buyer:

Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) is a very important medical condition, often providing debilitating for the individual and a caring role for a member of that individual’s family. However, it is not included in the ABI standard categories.

How Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) is defined is also important. Cheaper and less scrupulous policy producers will compromise on Total and Permanent Disability, either by not including it, or by defining it in such a limited way that it virtually impossible to claim against.
